Learners are more than just a number!
NewGrade is a revolutionary standards-based curriculum, grading, and reporting app designed to create a more equitable classroom through clear, skills-based feedback and assessment provided in a timely and meaningful format. Through a fun and simple user interface, NewGrade motivates teachers, empowers students, partners with parents, and supports administrators to make sense of grading standards and provide actionable data to help every student succeed. Let’s shift the focus away from the number and back towards the skills. Let’s help every student cultivate a joy and passion for learning.
NewGrade aims to become the premier free educational standards-based curriculum planning, grading, and reporting application for teachers, students, parents, and administrators. Unlike other educational grading software, NewGrade can function as an extension for existing LMS software or as a stand alone standards-based LMS. Through innovative technological and pedagogical approaches to grading, NewGrade will shift thinking about grading from a focus on a number to a focus on the learning. With NewGrade, teachers will become motivated experts in standards and curriculum, students will take proud ownership of their learning journey, parents will become informed partners in their child’s education, and administrators will gladly approach grading and reporting as a means to ensure growth, equity, inclusion, and differentiation for all students.
Education is facing a crisis of equity. In 2018, the National Council for Educational Statistics (NCES) described what they termed the “digital divide” for lack of home internet access for students of color. The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened this divide, prompting educators to sound the alarm and call for a new path forward in educational equity (Darling-Hammond et al, 2020; Sahlberg, 2020). The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to allocate more money into educational technology, specifically in the area of curriculum software (Rauf, 2020). However, such software places a further emphasis on the student’s ability to score well, rather than focusing on the students’ ability to grasp information and demonstrate skills. The Learning Policy Institute’s Framework for Restarting and Reinventing School (Darling-Hammond et al., 2020) delineates ten student-centered, equity-oriented targets for fundamentally rethinking our educational model to help all students succeed. NewGrade helps all stakeholders meet these ten objectives and redefine education through:
increased teacher curriculum-design education;
standards-based feedback that includes social-emotional soft skills;
community-building and strengthening of relationships between stakeholders through vibrant, meaningful, real-time communication;
assessment, grading, and reporting specifically designed to incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to help all students succeed;
and a forever-free model to help schools reallocate valuable funding resources back where it’s most needed: students and teachers.
NewGrade aims to utilize a business model balanced between a philanthropic model for education and a for-profit model for other industries. At NewGrade, we understand the struggles schools have with overcrowding and underfunding, and we look to capitalize on educational markets in other industries to provide a revenue stream that would fund the free educational software. NewGrade is scalable to any industry that employs a training program: from the medical industry to the military, from small businesses to large corporations. The NewGrade application will continue to be customized for each designated industry. NewGrade is determined to solve the issue of overspending on ineffective educational assessment technology and underfunding of the students and teachers who need the most help. In doing so, NewGrade hopes to partner with all educational stakeholders in any industry to forever change the way that we view curriculum, feedback, assessment, grading, and reporting.
